Trezor.io/Start | Starting® Up® Your® Device®
Official step-by-step setup guide to securely start your Trezor hardware wallet — easy, verifiable, and built for cold storage safety.
Quick start — secure setup in ~15 minutes
Follow these core steps on Trezor.io/Start to initialize your device safely. Read carefully — correct seed and firmware handling are critical.
- Download Trezor Suite: Use the official Trezor Suite desktop installer for the most reliable experience.
- Connect & update firmware: Plug in your Trezor Model T or Model One. If Suite prompts to install firmware, accept only on-device confirmations.
- Set a PIN: Choose a strong PIN when prompted. The PIN protects your device from unauthorized physical access.
- Write your recovery seed: Carefully copy the 12–24 word recovery phrase shown on-device to an offline medium (paper or metal). Never photograph, type, or store it digitally.
- Verify & test: Confirm receive addresses on the Trezor screen before sending funds. Consider a small test transfer first.
Security reminder: Trezor staff will never ask for your recovery seed. If asked for the seed by support or via email/DMs, stop immediately — it’s a scam.
Optional protections (advanced)
- Passphrase (hidden wallet): Add a passphrase to create an extra hidden account. It’s powerful but treat it as a second secret — store it offline.
- Trezor Bridge: Install Bridge on desktop when prompted to ensure your browser and Suite communicate securely.
- Biometric unlock: Enable biometric unlock for the Suite app UI on supported OSs — your private keys remain on the device.
Practice safe recovery planning
Consider redundant physical backups (paper + metal) and an inheritance plan — encrypted safe deposit box or trusted custodian arrangements for long-term holdings.
